Custom Basketball Uniforms: Fabric, Fit, and What to Ask Your Manufacturer

Custom Basketball Uniforms: Fabric, Fit, and What to Ask Your Manufacturer

Basketball uniforms take more punishment than most teamwear. Players sprint, jump, and battle for rebounds for 40 minutes, and the jersey has to move with them without riding up or clinging. If you are ordering custom basketball uniforms for your club, school, or league, here is what actually matters.

What fabric works best for basketball uniforms?

Basketball is a high-sweat indoor sport, so breathability is the top priority.

  • Performance polyester is the standard. It is lightweight, durable, and holds sublimated designs permanently.
  • Mesh knit is the most common choice for basketball jerseys. The open weave moves air and keeps players cooler during long runs.
  • Moisture-wicking finishes pull sweat off the skin. Ask your manufacturer whether their fabric includes this treatment or if it is an add-on.

Avoid heavy cotton blends for game uniforms. They absorb sweat, get heavy, and lose their shape. Cotton has its place in warmups and fanwear, not on the court.

How should a basketball uniform fit?

Basketball fit is different from soccer or volleyball. Jerseys are cut longer and looser so they stay tucked during play and do not restrict the shooting motion.

  • Jerseys should fall below the waistband with room through the shoulders. If your players wear compression tops underneath, size up.
  • Shorts are worn longer and baggier than in most sports, usually falling at or below the knee.
  • Women’s cuts are not just smaller men’s sizes. The jersey is tapered through the body with adjusted armhole depth. If your manufacturer cannot offer a true women’s pattern, that is a red flag.

Always request a size chart with actual garment measurements, not just S through 2XL labels. Sizing varies between manufacturers, and a chart prevents most exchange headaches.

Sublimation vs. other decoration methods

For basketball, the decoration method matters more than in almost any other sport, because the jersey stretches constantly.

  • Sublimation is the right choice for full-custom basketball uniforms. The design is dyed into the fabric, so it stretches with the jersey and never cracks, peels, or fades. Unlimited colors and gradients are possible.
  • Screen printing sits on top of the fabric. On a stretchy basketball jersey, thick prints can crack at the stress points over a season.
  • Heat-applied vinyl numbers look sharp initially but are the first thing to peel on a basketball uniform. Fine for a single tournament, risky for a full season.

If your team plays a full league season, sublimation is worth it.

What to ask your manufacturer before you order

These questions separate serious manufacturers from middlemen.

  1. Do you cut and sew in-house, or outsource production? In-house production means better quality control and faster fixes.
  2. Can I see a physical sample before the full run? Photos are not enough. A sample shows you the real fabric weight, stitching, and print quality.
  3. What is your minimum order quantity? This varies widely. Know it before you fall in love with a design.
  4. How do you handle player names and numbers? Confirm whether namesets are included in the price or charged per unit.
  5. What is the re-order policy? Mid-season additions happen. Ask whether reorders match the original colors exactly and what the minimum is.
  6. Who handles shipping and customs? International orders need clear terms on freight, duties, and delivery responsibility.

A manufacturer who answers these clearly is one you can trust with your season.

Frequently asked questions

How many uniforms should we order?

Count your roster, then add at least two extra sets. Players get injured, new players join mid-season, and a spare set avoids emergency reorders.

Home and away, or one set?

Most leagues require contrasting colors. If your budget covers one set, choose a reversible design or a color that contrasts with most opponents.

Can we put sponsor logos on basketball uniforms?

Yes. With sublimation, sponsor logos are printed directly into the design at no extra complexity. Just provide clean artwork and confirm placement on the mockup.

How far in advance should we order?

Earlier than you think. Design approval, production, and international shipping all take time. Start the conversation with your manufacturer at least two months before you need the uniforms.
